The XT has got independent ignition system, there is no battery required. The ignition energy is generated by the alternator, leads to the ignition coil and released at the appropriate time by the contact breaker. This has the disadvantage that a high peripheral speed of the crankshaft must be achieved to generate the necessary energy ... you must kick down powerful! Unfortunately the advancer works, too, and a kick back is the consequence.
With the digital ignition always a strong spark is generated directly in TDC, no matter of the peripheral speed of the crankshaft. Very good starting behavior and prevention of kick backs are achieved.
Other advantages are of course the exact adjusting of the ignition timing and thus a better engine operation. Therefore nine advance
curves are available.
The only disadvantage is the dependence on the battery, because without it the ignition does not work. The energy consumption of the ignition is very low and does not strain the power supply.
Furthermore, another (standard) ignition coil is necessary.
Whether new or used is not important.
